Pollution: problem-solving

The Diana Lab will be based at Barnard College, Columbia University in NYC beginning July 1, 2026. We are environmental scientists who aim to better understand pollution, primarily plastic pollution, to inform evidence-based solutions.

Our research streams focus on plastic pollution:

Sources and fate

May Jagodkin observing Tubifex tubifex under a microscope

Environmental health effects on aquatic biota and ecosystems

The Baltimore Trash Wheel

Solutions: prevention to remediation

Much of our research focuses on plastic pollution - from macroplastics to microplastics, though we are interested in contributors to global change broadly. Our research uses approaches and techniques from aquatic ecology, environmental health and toxicology, analytical chemistry, and the social sciences. We are an interdisciplinary lab that draws on methods and techniques from multiple fields. We can be found in the field, in the lab, and conducting analysis from our computers.
